History

It was 1934 when Jose Ochoa Jr. was born in a small town on the Texas Border named Peñitas. Anita Ochoa, his wife, was born on a ranch in Mexico. They grew up attending the same school and married in 1956. They ended up having a total of 10 children.  After a lot of hard work and savings, Ochoa started the Malakoff location in the early '70s. Originally it was just a small house, where the family helped and people came to enjoy quality food. This tiny house turned into the start of a big dream that became a reality, and the family legacy known as Ochoa's Mexican Restaurant was born. All of his children and some grandchildren have worked in the restaurant. As Jose's culinary reputation spread through the area, he incorporated his family into the business, including sons Javier, Julian, and George. They opened up additional locations in Athens and Canton that continue today to serve the same quality Mexican cuisine that you know. On the restaurant's 50th Anniversary, they sold the Malakoff location to the current owner, whose few years as a Food Service Officer in the U.S. Navy did not prepare him for the incredible responsibility of providing the best quality and authentic Mexican food. Luckily for this native from Jacksonville, Texas, Javier and George have continued to guide him through this journey. Equally as fortunate, the staff and new General Manager Mario Chavez chose to give him a chance, bringing their decades of experience and learning from the Ochoa family to continue the proud tradition of successfully serving the finest in Mexican cuisine to Henderson County since 1969.
